Why Joutsen down?

The difference between Joutsen down and regular down starts with the skill of knowing how to pick only the best down qualities available. We test the quality of each down variety in our own laboratory and ensure that we use the absolute best quality.

With more than 80 years of experience, we have established relationships with selected European partner farms – so we do not acquire down from anyone we do not know (the origin of the down can be verified and traced with the batch number). Therefore, all the down used in our products comes from farms which provide good, natural living conditions – this is the only way to produce high-quality down.

The high quality also enables you to wash our down products without worries. In fact, we clean and sort our down with care before it goes in our bedding or coats. The unique refining process includes double dust removal, and in addition, warm water pampers our down and perfect purity is ensured in a 125 °C thermal treatment.

In practice, the purity of the Joutsen down is unique as it is 100% dust-free. The down has also been meticulously cleansed of all sensitising ingredients which could cause allergic reactions.

Due to the extreme purity of the down, even a smaller amount of filling enables the Joutsen down duvets to create the required warmth. This also makes the Joutsen duvets more breathable – less filling is required and the duvet does not feel heavy.

The end products also do not contain any by-products of oil refining, such as synthetic fibers, which are common filling materials for many other manufacturers.  With regard to their recyclability, down products are pioneering items, because as natural products they can be returned to the natural circulation after their lifecycle. They also have a very small carbon footprint due to their long service life and the small environmental load created during production. Moreover, down is also a renewable natural resource.

Finnish textile manufacturing has been on the decrease, but two years ago Joutsen built a new factory in Riihimäki where bedding products are now being produced. Down coats are manufactured by our professionals in our modern factory in Estonia. Finnish goose down and hand-collected eiderdown from the Finnish archipelago are used in part for the bedding.
