Joutsen was born in a sauna
Joutsen's story began in a sauna in 1936, when Marius watched his wife Saima washing feathers in the gentle steam of a lakeside sauna. In that meeting place of everyday life, dreams, warmth, and purity, the idea for Joutsen was born.
Together, Marius and Saima developed Finland's first industrial down-cleaning method, making down cleaner, softer, and longer-lasting, and establishing their family business as a European pioneer.
By the 1940s and 1950s, Joutsen’s down duvets and pillows had found their way into Finnish homes. In 1966, Joutsen's down proved its performance on a Finnish expedition across Antarctica, where warmth, lightness, and durability were essential. This journey marked the beginning of Joutsen's down coat production.
Across generations, Joutsen has remained a family business rooted in the same values: the unique feel of carefully cleaned down and quiet Finnish craftsmanship that speaks through comfort and reliability.
Today, 90 years later, Joutsen continues its original mission—to bring trusted warmth, protection, and softness to northern life and to adventures everywhere.
