A good night in nature

A good night in nature

A good night in nature is not something taken for granted.
A day can be full of achievements, scenery, and movement, but if the night is cold, restless, or damp, the next day already feels heavy before it even begins.

In hiking and camping, sleep is not just a break from activity. It is part of the experience. That is why how and where we sleep has a surprisingly big impact on the entire trip.

A good sleeping bag is not the same for everyone, but there is a suitable solution for everyone.

There is no single way to sleep outdoors

In nature, people sleep in many ways. One seeks relaxation and space at night, another warmth and compactness. Depending on preference, a sleeping spot may be found in a hammock, a tent, a shelter, or even under the open sky. A good sleeping bag is not the same for everyone, but there is a suitable solution for everyone.

The relaxed sleeper
moves during the night, changes position, and often sleeps on their side. They value spaciousness, comfort, and the feeling that the sleeping bag adapts to the body rather than restricting movement.

The snug-shelter sleeper
sleeps more calmly, often on their back, and primarily seeks warmth and efficient thermal control. For them, light weight, a good fit, and heat staying where it should be are important.

Sleeping style affects everything: the shape, width, collar, and how air moves inside the sleeping bag during the night. It is not about a better or worse way to sleep, but about different needs and situations.

Shape, width, collar, and material choices are not isolated technical solutions, but a whole that determines what the night feels like. Not just on a thermometer, but in the body.

How sleeping style appears in sleeping bag design

Sleeping bag design is about finding balance. A too-loose bag feels cold. A too-tight one restricts movement and comfort. A good sleeping bag supports the way the sleeper is and moves during the night.

Shape, width, collar, and material choices are not separate technical solutions, but a whole that determines what the night feels like. Not just in temperature readings, but in the body.

One question has repeated itself: “Why don’t you make these anymore?”

Joutsen and sleeping bags, a return to roots

A good night in nature is not a new idea for Joutsen. Joutsen has produced sleeping bags and outdoor equipment for decades, at a time when hiking was not a trend but a way of moving and staying overnight in nature. Sleeping bags were born from the same starting point as home duvets: the need to sleep warmly, breathable, and reliably.

Although sleeping bags disappeared from Joutsen’s collection almost 20 years ago, they never disappeared from use. In recent years, contact has increasingly come from people who have still been using Joutsen sleeping bags made 19 years ago or earlier, asking whether they could be serviced or if a new one could be purchased.

As these bags are now naturally reaching the end of their life cycle, one question has been repeated: “Why don’t you make these anymore?”

The outdoor collection was born from this need.
Not out of nostalgia, but from the desire to bring sleeping bags back on the terms of modern outdoor life, without forgetting why they were originally made.

Modern and responsible choices as part of design

When sleeping bags were brought back, not everything was meant to be done the same way as before. Joutsen’s outdoor collection is based on the same core idea as its earlier sleeping bags: good sleep—but designed for today’s adventures. For varying conditions, different sleeping styles, and campsite life where the night is part of the experience.

The outdoor collection has been designed from the ground up with today’s sustainability requirements in mind. Material choices, structures, and manufacturing have been carefully considered so that the products withstand use and time. The down is responsibly sourced, and the constructions support longevity and ease of maintenance. Materials are utilized as efficiently as possible.

The goal is not a quickly replaced piece of gear, but a long-term companion that travels with you on many trips over the years. The collection is based on the idea that there are many kinds of hikers and many ways to sleep. That’s why the choices are about shape, roominess, thermal regulation, and how the sleeping bag feels throughout the night—not just technical specifications.

The same thinking that can be found in older Joutsen sleeping bags, but realized with today’s knowledge and solutions.

A good night in nature starts with the right choices

Sales of Joutsen’s outdoor collection will begin later in the spring.
